Prestbury Bridge

Until the early part of the 19th century, Prestbury’s main street ran straight down to the river. A ford led to the end of Pearl Street, the main street of Butley.
In about 1825, a new road was constructed behind the Pearl Street cottages. It met Pearl Street in front of the present White House Manor (called Bollingtonfield House at the time) before continuing towards the site of the railway station. The backs of the Pearl Street cottages became the fronts to the new road. The ford to Pearl Street was replaced by a bridge to the new road. Prestbury’s main street was curved round to meet it.
Prestbury Station was opened on 24 November 1845. In 1855 the bridge was replaced by the present one.
As well as the bridge, the picture shows Ford House and the site on the Pearl Street/Bollin Grove corner on which the Village Club was to be built in 1908. Butley Hall can be seen in the distance (upper right).
